FEATURED ARTIST
Piet Mondrian
Dutch 1872-1944

Piet Mondrian, a pioneering figure in abstract art and a leading member of the De Stijl movement, was born on March 7, 1872, in Amersfoort, Netherlands. Mondrian's artistic journey unfolded during a time of profound societal and artistic transformation, and he played a crucial role in shaping the visual language of modern abstraction.

Initially trained as a traditional landscape artist, Mondrian's style evolved under the influence of Cubism and theosophy. His exposure to the avant-garde movements in Paris, where he moved in 1911, marked a turning point in his artistic philosophy.

Mondrian, along with Theo van Doesburg, founded the De Stijl movement in 1917, seeking to establish a new visual vocabulary characterized by geometric abstraction and a reduction to essential elements. The movement advocated for harmony, simplicity, and the use of primary colours and non-colours (black, white, and grey).

Mondrian's mature style, known as neoplasticism or De Stijl, emerged with his iconic grid-based compositions. These paintings, characterised by rectangular forms and a strict arrangement of lines and colours, aimed to express universal harmony and spiritual order. Notable among his works is the "Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow" from 1930.

In 1940, seeking refuge from World War II, Mondrian moved to New York City. Despite the challenges of displacement, he continued to create his signature abstract compositions, emphasising the dynamic equilibrium between opposing elements.

Mondrian's impact extended beyond the realm of painting; he also contributed to the design of furniture and architectural concepts based on De Stijl principles. His geometric abstractions influenced a range of artistic disciplines, from fashion to graphic design.

Piet Mondrian passed away on February 1, 1944, in New York City. His legacy endures through the enduring influence of De Stijl and neoplasticism, marking him as one of the most influential figures in the development of abstract art. The simplicity and clarity of Mondrian's compositions continue to resonate with artists and admirers, affirming his place in the pantheon of 20th-century art pioneers.
