John Mortimer ARA
British 1740-1779

John Hamilton Mortimer was a renowned British painter and printmaker celebrated for his romantic artworks set in Italy, depictions of conversations, and his portrayal of war scenes reminiscent of Salvator Rosa.

Born in Eastbourne on 17 September 1740 to Thomas Mortimer, a customs officer and flour dealer, Mortimer displayed artistic promise from a young age. His artistic journey led him to London, where he studied at the Duke of Richmond's Academy, forging enduring friendships with fellow artists such as Joseph Wright. Mortimer's talent flourished under the tutelage of notable mentors like Giovanni Battista Cipriani, Robert Edge Pine, and Sir Joshua Reynolds.

Mortimer's early success came in 1759 when he won prizes for his studies after Michelangelo and life drawings. He became an active member of the Society of Artists, garnering recognition for his paintings depicting British historical subjects. His presidency of the society in 1774 underscored his influence in the British artistic community.

Notably, Mortimer collaborated with Thomas Jones on several projects, contributing figures to Jones's paintings. During the 1770s, Mortimer's artistic style evolved, embracing a more robust portrayal of the male form, influenced by Salvator Rosa's dramatic compositions.

His marriage to Jane Hurrel in 1775 marked a significant personal milestone but somewhat affected his artistic output. Despite this, Mortimer's talents continued to shine, as evidenced by his exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1778, where he showcased notable works like "Sir Arthegel" and scenes featuring Italian bandits. His contributions to the Royal Academy were recognized when he was elected as an Associate in November of the same year.

Tragically, Mortimer's life was cut short when he passed away on 4 February 1779 aged 38, leaving behind a legacy of artistic brilliance that continues to inspire generations of artists and art enthusiasts.
