Jean-Hippolyte Flandrin
French 1809–1864

Jean-Hippolyte Flandrin was a French painter known for his Neoclassical and religious works, particularly his frescoes and portraits. Born on March 23, 1809, in Lyon, France, Flandrin displayed an early talent for art and began his formal training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. Jean-Hippolyte Flandrin's artistic journey was intertwined with that of his brother, Paul-Jean Flandrin.

In 1829, Flandrin moved to Paris to continue his studies at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts, where he became a pupil of the renowned Neoclassical painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Under Ingres' tutelage, Flandrin developed a meticulous and precise painting style characterised by smooth brushwork and careful attention to detail.

Flandrin gained recognition for his skillful draftsmanship and sensitivity to colour, which he demonstrated in his early portraits and genre scenes. However, it was his religious works and monumental frescoes that brought him widespread acclaim.

One of Flandrin's most celebrated works is the fresco cycle in the church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris, completed between 1842 and 1861. The cycle depicts scenes from the life of Saint Genevieve, the patron saint of Paris, and showcases Flandrin's mastery of composition, perspective, and narrative storytelling.

In addition to his religious commissions, Flandrin also produced a number of portraits and allegorical paintings, often imbued with a sense of tranquility and spiritual depth. His works reflect the influence of both Neoclassical tradition and the burgeoning Romantic movement, combining classical forms with a heightened emotional and psychological intensity.

Throughout his career, Flandrin remained committed to the ideals of classical beauty and harmony, rejecting the more flamboyant and dramatic tendencies of his contemporaries. He was admired for his ability to infuse his paintings with a sense of serenity and grace, capturing the timeless essence of the human spirit.

Flandrin's contributions to French art were widely recognised during his lifetime, and he received numerous awards and honours, including election to the Institut de France in 1857. His legacy continues to endure today, with his works celebrated for their technical mastery, emotional resonance, and timeless elegance.
