Eric Holt
British 1944-1997

Eric Holt (1944–1997) was a British artist whose life and artistic journey unfolded across various stages. Born in Sutton, Surrey, in 1944, Holt showed an early passion for art, attending the special art course at Sutton East School from 1957 to 1959. He further honed his skills at Epsom School of Art from 1959 to 1962, later spending a brief period at Wimbledon School of Art.

Holt's life took diverse turns as he explored different professions, working as a groundsman, van driver, factory worker, and even in civil engineering, including tunnel digging. Despite these varied experiences, he maintained his connection to art, working on paintings, albeit at a slower pace.

Living and working in Purley from 1969 to 1978, Holt's artistic output increased as he participated in prestigious exhibitions, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions from 1971 to 1992. In 1978, he made a significant move to the countryside, settling near Sandringham, Norfolk, with his wife and two children.

Holt's artistic achievements were marked by a series of one-man shows at Maltzahn Gallery in 1972 and 1974, as well as Piccadilly Gallery in 1977, 1980, 1983, and 1987. His participation in national exhibitions and competitions, such as the Tolly Cobbold-Eastern Arts National Exhibition, showcased his talent and earned him recognition.

Eric Holt's artistic journey was cut short when he passed away in 1997 after a short battle with cancer. His final painting marked the end of a prolific and diverse career that spanned different periods and artistic expressions. Holt's legacy lives on through the body of work he left behind, capturing the essence of his experiences and creative exploration.
