FEATURED ARTIST
Derwent Lees
British 1885-1931

Derwent Lees, a British artist associated with the Bloomsbury Group, was born on August 29, 1885, in Hobart, Tasmania. Known for his contributions to both painting and printmaking, Lees played a role in the vibrant artistic circles of early 20th-century London.

Lees studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, where he developed a close friendship with fellow student and artist Mark Gertler. The two, along with other like-minded individuals, formed part of the Bloomsbury Group - a collective of writers, intellectuals, and artists known for their unconventional lifestyles and avant-garde perspectives.

Influenced by Post-Impressionism and the works of artists like Cézanne, Lees explored various styles throughout his career. His early works often depicted landscapes and rural scenes, displaying a sensitivity to color and form.

During World War I, Lees served in the army and his artistic output waned. Tragically, he experienced personal challenges during this time, including the death of his close friend Gertler. After the war, Lees returned to his artistic pursuits, creating a series of paintings influenced by his wartime experiences.

Lees' post-war works often featured introspective and symbolic themes. His style transitioned to incorporate elements of mysticism and a heightened focus on the emotional content of his subjects. The influence of his Bloomsbury connections and the broader cultural and intellectual milieu of the time is evident in the evolution of his artistic expression.

Derwent Lees' career, while relatively short, left an indelible mark on the art world. His works have been displayed in various exhibitions, including those associated with the London Group and the New English Art Club.

Unfortunately, Derwent Lees' life was cut short when he succumbed to pneumonia in 1931 at the age of 45. Despite his relatively brief career, Lees' artistic contributions, particularly within the Bloomsbury Group, continue to be recognized for their sensitivity, introspection, and their connection to the broader cultural and intellectual currents of his time.
